European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
